Hair shedding has been part of my life since having kids. Every shower reminded me of it when I looked down at the drain. I wanted something to help, so I decided to try Kilgour MD. The brand is created by a dermatologist and their focus is scalp health. I felt like it could be a safe choice.

I bought the duo set of The Prevention Scalp Serum and The Treatment Scalp Serum for 150 dollars after a discount on their website. I used both every day for two months before deciding whether to stick with it.

About Kilgour Md Hair Serum

The Prevention Scalp Serum is designed to protect the scalp and reduce hair shedding. On the other hand, the Treatment Scalp Serum is meant to stimulate hair growth and improve the look of thinning areas.

Both are light, non greasy serums. They go directly onto the scalp. They are also made without parabens or sulfates which is something I appreciated since I try to avoid unnecessary chemicals.

My experience using Kilgour Scalp Serum

When the box arrived, I was excited. The packaging looked sleek and clinical, almost like something I would get from a dermatologist’s office. That gave me confidence before I even opened the bottles.

The serums come with a dropper. I got into the habit of parting my hair and dropping the liquid directly onto my scalp, especially around my hairline and the crown where shedding was worst. It became part of my morning and night routine, usually after the kids were in bed and the house was finally quiet. It felt almost like self care.

The Prevention Serum was light and watery. It absorbed quickly and did not leave any greasy patches. The Treatment Serum was similar in feel but with a slightly thicker texture. Both blended into my scalp without any strong smell, which I appreciated.

By the third week, I noticed something. My shower drain was not filling up with as much hair. I could brush my hair without pulling out a whole clump. That was a small but important win. By the end of the first month the shedding was clearly less than before. I was hopeful and told myself that the growth results would come next.

In the second month, the improvement in shedding continued. I could run my fingers through my hair without as much breakage. That made me feel relieved, almost like I was finally slowing down the loss. But when I looked in the mirror, the spots I wanted to see fill in did not look much different. My hairline still looked thin. The crown still looked sparse.

I tried to be patient, but with how much I spent, I felt let down. At 150 dollars for the bundle, I expected at least some visible new growth by two months. I knew hair takes time, but the brand’s marketing had me thinking I would notice more. That was when I decided maybe it was time to try something else.

Is Kilgour MD a Scam?

Here is where things get complicated. When you buy from their website you are signed up for a subscription. I thought it would be simple to cancel but there was no way to cancel from the website. No subscription button. No account page. Nothing.

That means they keep your credit card information and you cannot remove it. I asked them to delete my card because by law in California a business must do that if a customer requests it. Still, it should not be this hard.

On top of that, I later learned that their key active ingredient is just topical minoxidil, either 2 percent or 5 percent. That means once you start you cannot stop or you risk losing any hair growth you gained. That felt misleading to me.

Better Alternatives

If you are looking for something that works, is safe, easy to buy, and easy to cancel here are some better options on Amazon.com;

Nutrafol

This is what I am using now and it has been the best alternative for me. Nutrafol is a supplement system for hair health and I have already seen better results than with Kilgour MD. My hair feels stronger and healthier and the shedding is much less. Here’s my result in only three weeks of use;

My baby hairs are starting to come in around my temples which is something I never saw with Kilgour MD. Taking the capsules each day feels easier than dropping serums twice a day. It also does not lock me into a subscription I cannot cancel.

One thing I like about the brand is that they cater to different hair issues. The particular one I got is for PostPartum mom as I’m postpartum mom. There are formulations for men, women of a specific age, e.t.c. Though pricey, it actually works and there are lots of reviews on Amazon.com about that. The

The Ordinary Multi Peptide Serum for Hair Density

Budget friendly serum with peptides that support scalp and hair. Popular because it is simple and effective for many users. If Nutrafol and Kilgour MD is on the high side for you due to their price, maybe you can start with this? It costs $22

Pros and Cons of Kilgourmd hair growth serum

Pros

Reduced shedding within two months
Lightweight formula that is easy to use
Made without parabens and sulfates
Dermatologist created

Cons

Very expensive at 150 dollars for a set
No dramatic hair growth results after two months
Subscription cannot be canceled from the website
Company keeps your billing info

Final Thoughts

Kilgour MD did help with my hair shedding. But the growth results were not enough for the high price. The subscription problem and the hidden use of minoxidil make me not trust this brand.

I am now using Nutrafol and already seeing much better results. If you want a product you can rely on, I would recommend trying that instead.
