So, how is tallow balm actually made? It starts with beef fat, which is rendered to separate the usable fat from water and other solids. That purified tallow then becomes the base of the balm. Depending on the brand, it may be combined with plant oils, beeswax, honey or other ingredients to change the texture and how it feels on the skin.
Where is it made?
Terralotus.shop claims their tallow balm is family owned and made in China. Most of their social media ads especially on Facebook lure people with a catchy hook ”TERRA Lotus was built on one belief; if we wouldn’t use it on our own family we wouldn’t make a product”
Interestingly, when my order arrived, the packaging says ‘Handcrafted in the USA’ but the barcode is a Chinese barcode. Now I don’t even know if it’s real or not. How does a product allegedly made in USA have a Chinese barcode?
So No, Terra Lotus Beef Tallow Balm is not made in USA, but China.
My experience using this tallow beef balm
As a body balm, I actually liked the texture. It’s firm in the jar, but melts instantly into a silk-like oil upon contact with skin warmth. A little goes a long way. If you feel greasy, you’ve likely used too much. Don’t leave out in hot temperature as it’ll melt and become runny. If it does happen, pop it into the refrigerator.
As for the scent, I got the unscented version and it does have a very faint, earthy/nutty aroma. No “beefy” smell, but also no floral perfumes.
It feels nourishing without requiring you to work it into the skin forever. A small amount spreads surprisingly far, and it leaves the skin feeling soft and protected. That said, I would be more cautious about using this particular formula on the face.
The formula contains olive oil, beeswax and honey, and it is not non-comedogenic. Rich oils and occlusive ingredients can be problematic for some people who are prone to congestion and breakouts.
If you have dry skin, a rich balm like this may be something you enjoy. But if your facial skin is oily or prone to clogged pores, I would be careful.
And yes, I know the argument that some sort of oil is needed to process or formulate these balms. That is fine. But not every oil behaves the same way on every person’s skin.
When I am looking specifically at facial skincare, I tend to look for lighter formulations and oils generally considered less likely to clog pores, such as argan, safflower or hemp seed oil.
Is Terralotus.shop a Scam?
So if you ask me if the website is a scam, I’d say; No but their business practice is quite shady. After two weeks of receiving my order I get an email that my card has been charged for two more jars. I immediately replied to the company not to ship this because i did not order it. They responded two days later saying I had signed up for a subscription. Which I know I did not since I did not even know if I would like the product.
Their email response was “Regarding the renewal order that just processed: Since this shipment is already queued for fulfillment in our system, we are unable to stop or cancel the transaction, so you will still receive it. Please be advised that per our terms of service, we do not accept returns or issue refunds on subscription renewals, so you will still receive this final package. If anything else comes up please let me know!”
If you’re keen on buying this tallow balm by Terra Lotus, I’d suggest buying off their official Amazon storefront. That way, there’s no subscription and extra charges.
